1619 - Brick House - 2019
Simone Leigh's Brick House "This is the first monumental sculpture in Leigh’s Anatomy of Architecture series, an ongoing body of work in which the artist combines architectural forms from regions as varied as West Africa and the Southern United States with the human body. The title comes from the term for a strong Black woman who stands with the strength, endurance, and integrity of a house made of bricks." - The Highline
Simone Leigh's Brick House is installed on the High Line at the Spur, at 30th St. and 10th Ave. I thought of the sculpture I'd photographed after reading the #1619 project. @nytimes explains: "The 1619 Project is a major initiative from The New York Times observing the 400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery. It aims to reframe the country’s history, understanding 1619 as our true founding, and placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of the story we tell ourselves about who we are." You must read it as soon as possible!
